Nusantara means \'archipelago\' in Bahasa Melayu. Often used to refer to the islands of Indonesia, it was historically a term that united the Malay world - the people and natural environments within and across what is known as Malaysia, Singapura, Indonesia, arguably south Thailand and parts of Borneo. There are many similarities in the traditions, customs and
cuisines of Malay communities in these countries. One of these is the shared pleasure in tea drinking.
The concept of a tea cafe aims to invoke a sentiment of joy understood by Malay peoples when drinking tea for relaxation or rehydration any time of the day. In any Malay home, the host always invites guests for tea accompanied with a quickly-created array of fresh homemade snacks and a compulsory invitation to stay for lunch/dinner.
Nusantara Indonesian Tea Cafe hopes to create a deeply-connected self-empowered community for all who identify as peoples of the Malay archipelago as well as promote the authentic taste traditions taught by our fore/grandmothers, sharing its vegetarian renditions with friends, families and wider communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.
To inspire, connect and promote the lost and found memories, stories and artefacts of Malay diaspora communities through our food and other cultural navigations.
